Creepy Target people are everywhere
I’ve really been enjoying my time in the CPHS media center, and I really think I’ve learned a lot. In fact, I might even go so far as to say that I love my job, except for two small things:
1. My job does not pay me for the summer months.
2. My job will no longer exist after early June.
Like families, governments and car manufactures everywhere, school districts are certainly hurting for funding right now and my district is no different. Unlike families, governments and car manufacturers, there are no unwarranted handouts for school districts in need of money. All they can take comfort in is the time honored tradition of the layoff. And, faced with an insurmountable deficit for next year (seriously, they’re talking about closing a school and STILL not having enough money to make up the difference in the next couple of years), my district has decided that they no longer want someone of my caliber running their laminating machine and asking students for passes 7.5 hours a day, five days a week.
Fine. Good. All’s well. I was planning on getting a licensed position next year anyway. I’m digressing. What I wanted to post about was my quest for gainful employment that led me to a brief but glorious five-day reign as a dairy department stock boy in a Target Super Center.
Thinking I needed to find a quick-fix job for the summer that could get me and my lovely wife through until I start a licensed teaching position (or subbing) next school year, I started applying for any job I could find earlier this spring. One of those applications was sent to Target, who were apparently so enamored with both my answers to their million-page long questionnaire (yes, I DID get good grades in high school) and my master’s degree that they called me to set up an interview the day that I turned in the application.
That should have been my first sign that maybe this just wasn’t the right fit for me. Find out why by continuing with this post!
They brought me in for an interview that lasted about 10-15. They told me I’d made it through to a second interview. They brought me out to a hallway behind the shoe department and I waited five minutes until a different person came in to conduct the second interview. I thought maybe they’d want to do a third interview right away, too, but apparently the third person was busy. My third interview was a week later.
They offered me the job during the third interview. I took it, and then they told me I’d be making $7.50 and hour. Fine, I thought. I don’t need much during the school year, and most places bump up the pay after a couple of months. It wasn’t until my training that I learned my next raise wouldn’t come until 2010 at the earliest.
Training also taught me lots of other useful information: how to safely climb a ladder (three points of contact at all times), how to ask “Can I help you find something” (over and over and over), and that sexual e-mails concerning the butt of my coworker are not appropriate. It also taught me about the kind of people I would be working with. The girl next to me looked like she was about 12 and kept texting throughout the orientation session.
I was assigned to the dairy section. The guy I spent my first night of training with was actually really nice. He was an adult. He was also an employee of a large bank in the mortgage unit. I didn’t mind him. It was everyone else I worked with and the job itself that sucked so bad. I spent the entire night loading milk jugs into the cooler section and straightening packs of cheese and frozen food. In fact, that’s what I did for the next four nights I worked, all of which came right after school and lasted until it was time for me to go to bed.
Plus, my coworkers were all high schoolers or just out of high school. During one work session, I was talking to one of my coworkers (many of whom had a penchant for swearing right in front of customers), and I mentioned that I was working toward my teaching license. He said he was, too. I said great! What are you going to be teaching? He said that, well, he had this class in his high school where he went to work with special ed every day and he really likes it. I wanted to cry.
It isn’t that I have anything against younger people, but I do have something against working in a job that is really designed for younger people. And the fact that I sent about 5-6 hours a night straightening packages of frozen food killed me – especially because the money I made from doing it amounted to less than $50 a night. Plus, there were only about 15 minutes each day that I could see Molly between school and work.
I know this probably makes me seem like a baby, but I hated it. I hated everything about it and I couldn’t stand working there. I even thought about cutting down on my hours to make it work. But the guy I talked to about that (also younger than me) told me that he’d work on it with me the next day, and then was gone within 15 minutes of me arriving at work the next day.
So I quit. I gave them my two week notice that actually only amounted to one week. They had scheduled me for a second week, but it was actually with more and later hours (after my asking for fewer and earlier hours), so I told them I wasn’t coming in anymore.
And that’s that. I’m still looking for summer work, but I know I can do much better than Target. There are a couple of jobs I’ve applied for that actually sound interesting to me and that I might even put on my resume afterward.
